In 1986, Mazda sold 86,000 RX-7s in the United States, with sales peaking two years alter. It was 80 pounds heavier than the first generation RX-7; however, it had a turbocharged rotary engine that kicked out 182 horsepower, enough guts to win it Motor Trend’s Import Car of the Year for 1986
